Gerardo Re Depaolini
In the area of Lecco where he’s at home, he is known simply as “Gerri”: apart from being a powerful and volcanic alpinist and rock climber, he is a true magician at repairing climbing shoes which he manages to sole better than anyone else. So, if he isn’t out enjoying himself on some rocks, you can be sure to find him at the Alpstation Brianza, eager to lay hands on your favourite footwear. Already past fifty – Gerri was born in Legnano in 1960 – his enthusiasm is still the same and his passion as contagious as that of a young boy. No doubt, it is that very longing which enabled him to spy and tackle routes like "Falce e martello" on the Corna di Medale (390 m, IX-, back in 2002) as well as several adventurous lines on the towers of his beloved Grignetta, and various other itineraries. There used to be cartoons with a certain sort of hero, characters whose actions took place in immense uncontaminated spaces. Well, maybe the love that has been drawing Gerri to those rock faces ever since 1978 comes from them. In any case, our “hero” is convinced of being «an “ordinary” alpinist, who has been patient and humble enough to improve his skills step by step in order to become the man he now is».
