The Grandes Jorasses North Face – a legend in the history of alpinism. Stéphane Benoist, born in 1971, has found himself face to face with it several times, managing to give his best by successfully tackling the most arduous lines ("Gousseault-Desmaison", "Rolling Stones", "Directe de l'amitié", "No siesta"...), and more than once in winter as well. But our Frenchman, a top-notch alpinist on a world level, doesn’t only perform brilliantly on home ground. He has also got numerous expeditions to his credit, including the one in 2003 to the north face of Thalay Sagar (6903 m, Himalaya, India) where he and Patrice Glairon-Rappaz spent ten days to set up "One Way Ticket" (1200 m, V+, WI6 and M6). Not to forget, the splendid realisation of his and the same companion on the south face of Nuptse (7861 m, Himalaya, Nepal): a 2000-metre long line (rated M5 and 90°) established in a splendid style from 27 to 29 October 2008. The fact that Stéphane ranges from high-altitude to sport climbing proves that he holds his own in this specialty, too ( having scaled routes as difficult as 8b), and it makes him a complete and absolutely extraordinary master also to his pupils of the “Groupes excellence alpinisme” part of the Ffcam (Fédération française des clubs alpins et de montagne).
