Antonio (Tone) Valeruz
The feats of Tone Valeruz, born in 1951 in the Fassa valley, cannot be described with words. They are something you’ve got to see, relive as spectators, at least thanks to the videos that can be found on the web. This way you’ll understand what he’s managed to accomplish. When you hear him say «Scary, huh! This is no longer skiing... it’s been the most difficult one, by far» you just stay there, spellbound, as you watch him ski down the east face of Civetta. Not a full speed plunge, like on Lyskamm’s north face – which Tone skied down in three minutes -, but three hours and thirty-five minutes in a separated reality that will not allow the slightest error. According to the master, extreme skiing is above all a mental game. As he explains «One’s mind has got to remain cold. Like when one climbs without a rope: one mustn’t go beyond the limit. One may feel the strongest emotion before the descent, half way down or once one’s reached the bottom. As for me, the strongest emotion arises instinctively, when I experience the birth of an idea: that’s the thing I’ll do, that’s what I’ll go and do».
