Section Military High Mountain returns to Patagonia to work in the massifs of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy

On November 6, 2014, from Torino Caselle Airport, will start the Military Mountaineering Expedition "Patagonia 360" planned by the Military Section of High Mountain Sports Centre of the Italian Army based in Courmayeur (AO).

The group will be composed of three mountain guides, military force and the Army Alpine Troops, led by the Leader of Expedition Lt. Col. Remo Armano who will be entrusted with the task of coordinating the climbers and connect with the responsibles in Italy. At the M. Col. Sc. Marco Farina will be entrusted the responsibility of decision-making on the walls of the two main massifs in which the group will operate, Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy.

The M. Cpl. Marco Majori will be in charge of the production of photographic and multimedia reports of new ascents, while Cpl. François Cazzanelli will have care of materials for climbing useful for attain the objectives.

Based on the experience gained in previous expeditions (Fitz Roy 2005 - Patagonia 2010 and 2013), knowing the sudden and ever-changing weather of the Andes massifs, the climbers will chose the programming of three categories of goals depending on windows of good weather that will have:

  • window of at least 1-2 days of good weather: Development of new routes of rock structures in the area;
  • window of at least 2-3 days of good weather: Repeat routes of mid development with high level technical and psycho-physical;
  • window of at least 3-4 days of good weather: Achievements of ascents with high technical and physical and mental development and engagement with particular attention to the two peaks symbol of the area: Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

The arrival to the town of El Chalten, which will leave several attempts, is scheduled for Friday, November 7, and the group will have less than 40 days to hope for good weather before returning planned for December 15th.
