EPISODE 12 | AMAZONIA. WHERE THE LEGEND BEGINS

On the road to Pichari

Amazzonia. Alle sorgenti del mito

02/04/2016 -

It is not a road for old people and on my way up to the top, curve after curve, I remember only the descent profile and fog. Pebbles, yellow earth, dust, trees, donkeys, dogs, sacred images, fields of crops, farmers, oxen, markets, trucks and kids, kids everywhere. On the mountains, distant and colorful, I can  imagine cornfields, cocoa and coke. We are going down from Ayacucho to Pichari on the Rio Apurimac and the road, wild and beautiful, it is a constant provocation.
There is a giant in the middle of the street, I say to the driver (a stone face) that is chewing coca leaves. He responds with a nod, then he adds a few words that I do not understand and the smell unmistakable of chewed coca hangs over the air.
The figure that from a distance looked like a giant, closely becomes a peasant woman. Our car slows down and then, at my invitation, it stops nervous. The driver is annoyed, he doesn't want to waste time. I instead would stop and ask the woman if I can photograph her. How many years do you have? - I ask. She answers a number starting with the twenty and the first thing I think to do is to break down the wrinkles to look for a space, that clean and smooth space for justifying a youthfulness, hidden from fatigue.
She is loaded of dry foliage that towers her like armor. She allows for one photograph, two, three, then, vacated the space she occupied, run away quickly, climbing up. Still enchanted I stay there admiring a landscape no longer interrupted.
